THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD
Review by Michael French
Say the name Robin Hood, and it will always conjure up images of Errol Flynn for me.  I grew up
with the 1938 Technicolor classic, “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” and to this day it has lost none
of its luster or charm.  Certainly, 1938 was a watershed year for Hollywood, but to speak about this
swashbuckling classic in even remotely academic terms is to do it a serious injustice.

Let me be frank.  "The Adventures of Robin Hood" is one of the top five greatest adventure films of
all time, and usually it hovers between first and second place depending on what mood I'm in.  It's
inspired countless imitations including the 1973 Walt Disney animated "
Robin Hood" and the Mel
Brooks comedy "Robin Hood: Men in Tights."

By the way, if you haven't seen "The Adventures of Robin Hood" and you have seen "Men In
Tights" and you think it's funny, you're an idiot because unless you've seen "The Adventures of
Robin Hood" you miss over half the jokes.  Get a clue and see this movie.  But I digress.

This film called all the shots for the Robin Hood legend on the silver screen.  Watch the animated
"
Robin Hood" and you'll notice that the fox in the archery tournament playing Robin is wearing the
same disguise Flynn wears in this film.  There's a ton of stuff like that floating around newer
incarnations of the bandit from Sherwood Forest.

Seriously though, forget this film's successors.  Flynn's version is THE BEST.  Where else can you
see Errol Flynn whupping up on tyranny, injustice, and Basil Rathbone?  Flynn is a wonder.  I wish I
could be like him.  I mean, he wears green tights, has sequins on his sleeves, a feather in his pointy
hat, a squire-boy coif, laughs like a sally, and still gets the girl in the end!

This film also sports one of the greatest sword duels of all time between Flynn and Rathbone, a
fight that would inspire generations of adventure films to come.

If you haven't seen this film, holy geeze.  See it.  Flynn's Robin Hood is the manliest action hero of
all time.  He spends the whole movie taking huge bites out of mutton joints, swinging from trees and
jumping around like a maniac, and being a smart ass the whole time.  He shoots more people with
arrows than Robocop ever killed in his entire trilogy!  He gets into wicked swordfights and just flips
out and starts wailing on people.

The guy even takes two dudes out by throwing a deer on them!  A big ol' deer!  It's awesome and it
makes you think, "Yeah!  I wanna throw a deer at someone too!"

Errol Flynn is THE MAN.  He's my hero in tights.  He even makes Superman look like a total
sallymonger!

Don't waste anymore time.  Check this film out.  It's amazing.  Great stunts, superb action, awesome
medieval dialogue including words like "popinjay" and the like.  Need I say more?!  See it, see it,
see it!
