THE BOURNE IDENTITY
Review by Jonathan French
Hell yeah! MATT DAMON IS JASON BOURNE!!!  I admit that I mocked this film's trailer without end
and I am stoked that I was proved wrong.  This was a fantastic European espionage flick that left
me wanting more.

Matt Damon is a hapless schmuck pulled out of the ocean by French seaman.  And that’s just the
beginning of his troubles.  He also has bullets in his back, electronic information sewn into his skin
and no memory to speak of.  So, he goes on an information gathering bender to discover who he
is.  Come to find out, he’s a ninja.  Well, okay, not a literal ninja, but he is pretty sneaky and
competent in the making people dead department.  He is led to something called Treadstone and
must find out if it is indeed something other than those grainy drink coasters sold at fruity new age
stores.

This movie did away with most of the typical Hollywood glitz and glamour, opting instead for a gritty,
in your face thrill ride.  They went with so little gloss that the lead female was even rough to look
at; it took me a second to realize she wasn’t Warwick Davis.  No cheesy, Bondesque one-liners
and no fancy equipment or cars.  Bourne uses what is at his disposal, including a rusty clap trap
Mini, a writing pen and a farmer's duck hunting, breach loading, double-barreled shotgun.

Little Matty Damon is showing that cornball pal of his, AA Affleck what it is to be the next action
star!  He's got some moves in this one, Cats and Kittens!  We see him deliver the body slam of the
century and some luckless dude-man gets a punch to the balls that is so brutal, it caused every
guy in the theatre to grab his cluster!

The ever-cool Clive Owen makes a “before he was famous” appearance as an assassin sent to
end Bourne’s identity.  And, plus of all pluses:  Brian Cox once again reprises the role that he
plays in every film: the sinister American secret operations bureaucrat with a suspiciously Scottish
accent!

The only downer to this film was the stereotypical “hero/girl caught up in the mess, we are basically
strangers but were just in a car chase” sex scene.
