THE CAVE
This film was just badly thought out. The back story is muddy, the plot is boring, the scary
creatures are blatant rip offs of "Aliens," except that they fly, but amazingly enough the black guy
actually survives, though the Asian guy bites it.
They started out with an interesting premise. There's a cave in the middle of the mountains that
has been sealed by an ancient culture who built a monastery on top of it to keep people away. The
people die out eventually and the cave is forgotten. Then thirty years ago, a group of people are
looking for the cave and break in, but there is an avalanche and the cave is sealed again with the
people inside it. Now, thirty years later, a group of scientists want to get into the cave and find the
entrance, but can't get very far so they hire the best cave divers in the world. Enter our heroes.
Anyway, these heroes go down into the cave to map it and find a bunch of species that don't exist
outside of the cave. Eventually, they meet up with the giant monsters that live down there and
people start dying and a cave in traps them and they have to find another way out...blah, blah, blah.
Here are some of the problems. They set up all these religious undertones at the beginning and
never follow through on them. The avalanche at the beginning makes it seem like God himself
wants the cave sealed, yet the next time they break into the cave nothing happens. The scientists
say that the reason there are all these undiscovered creatures down there is because the cave is
completely sealed, yet the whole premise of the story is that these people are looking for a way
out...ummm...if the cave is completely sealed, how can there be another way out? Whatever...there
are a bunch of other issues, but I'll leave them for you to discern on your own.
The acting actually isn't that bad considering the really cheesy writing. And the ending is actually
kind of interesting which almost made me glad I saw it, but not entirely.
If you're thinking about seeing this film...I wouldn't. If you're looking for something scary to cozy up
to someone with...it's not that scary. If you're looking for something suspenseful with cool
creatures...it's not really suspenseful and I've already mentioned that the creatures are a rip off. If
you're looking for a bunch of attractive people in wet suits...you won't even get that because the
wet suits are kind of bulky and they've got all kinds of gear on them, though there is a shot where
one of the guys has to cut one of the girls wet suits down the front to give her CPR and exposes
her bra. (Do you wear a bra under a wet suit???) But magically the suit is back to normal in the
next shot, so there is no overexposed cleavage as one might expect. If you're looking for
something that will kill a couple of hours...yes...this movie can do that for you.
